Some Experiments in Applying Inductive Inference Principles to Surface Reconstruction

چکیده
This paper presents an application of the Minimum Description-Length (MDL) principle of inductive learning to the surface reconstruction problem of computer vision. The application demonstrates that the M D L principle can be applied to practical problems while preserving its convergence properties. It also illustrates how at least one aspect of computer vision (i.e., surface reconstruction) can be treated as an inductive inference problem using this principle. This has the advantage that the convergence properties of the M D L principle enable an exact surface reconstruction to be obtained asymptotically as the number of available data points increases. Moreover, convergence to the true surface occurs independent of the amount of error in the measurements.

Analogical Predictive Probabilities
It is well known that Rudolf Carnap’s original system of inductive logic failed to provide an adequate account of analogical reasoning. After this problem was identified there has been no shortage of proposals for how to incorporate analogy into inductive inference. Most alternatives to Carnap’s system, unlike his original one, have not been derived from first principles; this makes it to some ...
متن کاملA Little Survey of Induction
My purpose in this chapter is to survey some of the principal approaches to inductive inference in the philosophy of science literature. My first concern will be the general principles that underlie the many accounts of induction in this literature. When these accounts are considered in isolation, as is more commonly the case, it is easy to overlook that virtually all accounts depend on one of ...
متن کاملMDL Method: an Inductive Inference Method for Reconstructing Phylogenetic Trees
Though various computational methods have been proposed to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree from the nucleotide sequence di erences so far, there are no decisive reconstruction methods yet so that a new method is expected. The expected method is supposed to be based on the probabilistic model of the base substitution process along the tree, and besides, to incorporate some evaluation of the tr...
متن کاملHistory of Science and the Material Theory of Induction: Einstein’s Quanta, Mercury’s Perihelion
The use of the material theory of induction to vindicate a scientist’s claims of evidential warrant is illustrated with the cases of Einstein’s thermodynamic argument for light quanta of 1905 and his recovery of the anomalous motion of Mercury from general relativity in 1915. In a survey of other accounts of inductive inference applied to these examples, I show that, if it is to succeed, each a...
متن کاملHans Reichenbach's Probability Logic
Any attempt to characterize Reichenbach’s approach to inductive reasoning must take into account some of the core influences that set his work apart from more traditional or standard approaches to inductive reasoning. In the case of Reichenbach, these influences are particularly important as otherwise Reichenbach’s views may be confused with others that are closely related but different in impo...
